Rule 1: Don't worry, it's just a Cartoon

Writer's picture: Donovan DauDonovan Dau

The first rule is "Don't worry, it's just a Cartoon".

I’m borrowing this rule wholesale from Tony Bancroft’s book Directing for Animation. It's available on amazon and you can check it out in the link here

This rule has four meanings

The first meaning of this rule is that you are not a brain surgeon, nuclear power plant engineer, airline pilot, or even a stay-at-home mother of five. Lives are not at stake and there is no catastrophic risk involved if you screw up. The worst case scenario is that you make something that's crap and it makes no money...that's most things on social media nowadays anyways.

The second meaning of this rule is to not take yourself, or your ideas, too seriously. Chances are you are never going to be the next Don Bluth or Hayao Miyazaki; even in the scenario where you are able to make a living off of it independently. And the truth is...you're not supposed to. All you really need to do is just simply be entertaining.

Going off of that, The third meaning of this rule is to not overdo it with your cartoons. Don't start writing out a worldbuilding and character development bible before you start drawing your story (you'll learn more why Later on).

The final meaning of this rule is that Cartooning should be fun, and you should enjoy what you do. Learn to enjoy the process and enjoy your finished work. Cartoons are an art form that is meant to be enjoyable for everyone, even the creators.

All in all, this rule is a way to just say "stop worrying and have some fun".
