Rule 6: KISS (Keep It Short & Simple)

Writer's picture: Donovan DauDonovan Dau

The sixth rule is "Keep It Short & Simple"; or KISS for short

This rule is often taken for granted by most artists online these days; especially since they feel they have the freedom (and sometimes obligation) to tell deep and complex stories with their art. The irony with that mentality is that cartoons work best by telling simple stories in a bold and exciting way.

For example; Most great stories in Animation have a simple premise:

Disney's The Little Mermaid: A mermaid dreams of becoming human & marrying a dashing prince

Kiki's Delivery Service: A witch uses her powers to make deliveries on her broomstick

Balto: An outcast dog goes on a quest to get medicine to save a little girl who is sick

Monsters Inc: The monsters in your closet just scare you for their 9 to 5 job

Ratatouille: A rat dreams of being a chef

Going off of that, here are a few one liners to describe the Donoverse:

"What if the Eighties Never Went Away?"

"Family Life in an 80s sci fi world"

"Robotech meets Full House"

"The Jetsons but 80s sci fi"

Dont be fooled, most audiences prefer to consume stories that are simple and easy to follow. The world is full of complicated problems; ranging from work/school, to relationships, to general issues in society of the era. People don't really want to add the complications of your story to those complications, they want a break from them.

The best way to do this is to tell stories that are easy to follow, simple enough to understand, and resolved quickly in a satisfying way.

Lastly, As I also mentioned before, this will ultimately help you as the creator in the long run, lest you get burnt out spending a decade on a single project.
