Project CIRMEX

I created Project CIRMEX as an outlet for my fan art—an imaginative space that exists adjacent to the Donoverse but not quite fully within it. While Project CIRMEX is set in Columbia, and takes place within the retro futuristic world and slice-of-life Context of The Donoverse, it is not officially part of the larger series; instead occupying its own creative pocket. Project CIRMEX is an alternate univers fanfiction—featuring characters from various animated movies and TV shows from the 80s and 90s.

The name “Project CIRMEX” was inspired by a mix of two influences. The first is the 1986 Anime Movie Project A-Ko, a trope heavy and pop culture saturated comedy that inspired the idea for this Zine in the first place. The word “CIRMEX” itself is a deliberate twist on “Disney,” much like how HAL in 2001: A Space Odyssey mirrors “IBM.”

For Me, Project CIRMEX serves a dual purpose. On the one hand, It is a tribute to the animation of the 1980s and 1990s “Renaissance” era that influenced my own artwork. On the other hand, it stands as a quiet lamentation of the current state of the western animation industry; reflecting on what has been lost, what could have been, what has changed, and what can still inspire.
